There are over 300 varieties of parrots available, and you may be astonished by the choice available in terms of color, pattern features and prices.

Some of the birds that are quite popular include Amazon birds, cockatoo birds and macaw birds.

Certain factors need to be considered before you actually make the purchase.

Buying a parrot should never be an impulsive decision by blindly following your friends or neighbors

Make sure of doing a through leg work of gathering as much information as possible about each of the parrots before making the final decision.

Not all parrot breeds are same, and hence each of their needs are different.

So nurturing a parrot would become your full-time duty.

Macaws have a vibrant and colorful plumage and they are popular for their boisterous and socially active nature.

The Blue and Gold macaws are large in size and would not only require larger cages to accommodate them but also dedicated attention and care.

Greenwing Macaws are comparatively the calmer version of their hyperactive counterparts.

The average lifespan of macaw birds ranges from 20-30 years with size varying from 13-40 inches.

Some of the common variants of Cockatoos are Moluccan, Goffin, Umbrella, Sulfur Crested and Lesser Sulphur Crested to name a few.

However the larger Cockatoos also make a lot of strident noise and are attention-seekers with a frequent tendency to escape from their cages.

If you are looking for a cute and affable parrot then go for a Cockatiel, which is the smallest species of cockatoo birds.

They are adorable creatures and can be an ideal companion for your kids who might get intimidated by louder, noisier and aggressive parrots.

With sizes ranging between 12 to 25 inches, these birds are also highly intelligent and a favorite among parrot lovers.

Those who have asthma or other respiratory problems should avoid Cockatoos as they shed a lot of feather dust.

Amazon birds are the most independent of the lot and can be on their own if provided with toys and stuffs it can remain engaged with.

They come in different sizes between 10-18 inches varying from one species to another.

The Amazons are popular for their wonderful capacity to speak, their outgoing nature and faithfulness to the owner.

These birds are mostly green in color with additional tinge of color depending on species.

The characteristics of different species might vary a bit from each other.

For example Red-lored Amazons have a calm disposition whereas the male blue-fronted birds tend to show aggressive streaks in their character during mating season.

So it is wise to research about the various species of parrots before zeroing in on which pet to get for your household.

There are many different varieties of macaw parrots. Each variety has special qualities that pet owners find interesting and majestic. Each demonstrates different temperaments but they are generally intelligent, highly trainable and fun-loving birds.

The Blue Gold Macaw for example demonstrates good personality. They are very adaptable therefore can be handled by just anyone.

Each variety of Macaw Parrots has different lengths. They range from smallest (12 inches) up to the largest (3 feet).

Second to the largest variety is the Green Wing Macaw with a length of 36 inches. This variety very much enjoys large space on their cages as well as when allowed to fly around the house.

Macaw Parrots also have different colors. They range from green to deep blue and some others have orange or butterscotch color in their chests especially those that are found at Trinidad and Caribbean areas.

The Scarlet Macaw alone has combined red, green, yellow and blue on its body and wings. Overall, it is very attractive for this variety, which will really captivate many pet owners.

Some varieties have strong beaks that are used for crushing nuts. They live closely together as flocks or as pairs in the forests. Their origin depends on which country or regions they are mostly found. But, in general they are as diverse as any other birds of their kind. Some places where they are found are in the regions of South America. Other places include Panama at the Eastern part, Colombia, Ecuador and Amazon.

Their life expectancy ranges from about 50 years to approximately 80 years which makes them a lifelong companion.

These kinds of birds are treasured for their perpetual beauty, plumage and great personality. They are renowned to be great pets for the most part. Some varieties of them can speak but generally they are limited to mimicry and imitation. Social interaction exposure is a necessity so that their development is ensured. They can be handled easily even though they can be very loud and destructive.

Pet owners must possess basic knowledge about taking care of these birds in order to make sure that the bird’s development and training are well met. Once the owners meet the bird’s requirements namely – attention, training and interaction – the bird will then form a strong bond with them.

For the most part all macaws share similar personalities and make good pet parrots it’s more the color and size of the different species that is the deciding factor for someone that wants to buy a parrot.

Parrots are usually thought of as being large and somewhat difficult to care for, but there are plenty of smaller parrots that are not so demanding.

The variety of parrots that aren’t so big and demanding is huge. Most of these parrots will belong to the conure, the mini macaw or the parakeet groups.

Conure birds

Conure birds are native to Central and South America with a few species spreading out to Mexico and the Caribbean Islands.

It depends on the species but the life expectancy of these social, playful and colorful parrots ranges from 15 to 35 years.

They are social, active, playful parrots with sweet dispositions and are easy to train.

Conures can learn to say a few words but their speech isn’t very clear.

Most conures get along with children and make good family pets, however some will form a bond with just one person and won’t tolerate anyone else.

Mini Macaws

If you want a macaw but don’t have the room or the money for one of the large one, a mini macaw could be ideal.

They take up less space and most of them are relatively inexpensive.

They aren’t as demanding as the large macaws, but they do still need some attention every day.

Mini macaws are intelligent, friendly little parrots that make good family pets.

Parakeet birds

Parakeets is a term used to define a large number of small to medium sized parrots that generally have long pointed tails. In addition most parakeets are quite colorful birds.

Parakeets spend their day climbing, chewing on whatever they see, jumping or flying from perch to perch or laying with their toys. They are extremely active and rarely sit still.

A parakeet bird is a social parrot that gets along with everyone. They are intelligent and easy to tame.

They are fairly good at mimicking speech and they are quick to learn tricks.

There are exceptions, but most of them are easy on the pocket book, and all of them are easy to care for.

Any one of these types of parrots are a good choice for someone that doesn’t have a lot of room or a huge bank account.

The double yellow headed amazon is native to northern Central America and Mexico. It is stocky parrot with a square tail and is about 17 inches long from head to tail.

They have red on the bends of the wings and tail, a yellow head and a bright green body.

They are playful, out going, intelligent parrots that are quick to learn tricks and are real showoffs that love performing.

When it comes to mimicking human speech only the African Gray parrot is considered better than the amazon birds and the double yellow headed amazon is said to be the best of the amazons at it

There is a stage known as bluffing that amazon birds go through as they start to reach maturity. During this stage they aren’t nearly as affectionate and entertaining.

The inexperienced parrot owner will find them to be a real challenge during this bluffing stage. They will be stubborn and aggressive.

If they have enough toys to play with amazon birds can be left to entertain themselves for longer periods of time than some of the less independent parrots can.

Some parrots like the cockatoo birds may require a lot more attention than the amazons, but that doesn’t mean that they don’t require some socialization every day.

If they don’t get enough attention and get bored they will start to develop some bad habits. Most notably loud screaming.

If you want to keep your parrot healthy and happy you need to let it out of it’s cage every day to explore, play and get some exercise.

You need to supervise your amazon while it’s out of it’s cage. It can get tangled up in bind cords, eat poisonous plants or materials or simple destroy your coffee table.

If you feed your amazon too many seeds it will become obese. Their main diet should be pellets, fruits and vegetables. Use seeds for special treats and training.

They are a challenge when they go through the bluffing stage, but a double yellow headed amazon makes a great pet once they get over it.

If you thing that these might be too challenging a parrot for you, maybe you should consider one of the parakeet species.

A ringneck parakeet is 16 inches from head to tail, which makes it a medium sized parakeet bird.

These parrots have an average lifespan between 20 to 25 years.

Breeders have created a number of different color mutations in the ringnecks besides the green that they are in the wild.

Here is a small sampling of the different color mutations that you can find. Theres the pied ringnecks, lutino ringnecks, cinnamon ringnecks, gray ringnecks, and blue ringnecks.

You can tell the sex of the adults by the fact that the males have a black and rose ring around the neck. Both male and female ringneck parakeets have red beaks.

Bluffing is a stage that an adolescent ringneck parakeet will go through that causes it to become more aggressive and prone to biting

Punishing your parakeet bird for biting by slapping it, yelling at it or shaking your hand vigorously is not going to work

Parrots bite to defend themselves and if you make your pet parrot afraid of by using aggressive means to punish it, it will defend itself by biting. Its best to ignore your parrot until it stops biting.

The ringneck parakeet’s ability to talk is up there with the best parrots. They learn tricks easily and as long as they aren’t in the bluffing stage they are easy to train and handle.

When a ringneck parakeet has bonded with a person they become protective and act aggressively to any bird, pet or human that it feels is too close to that person.

Ringnecks need socialization and handling every day or they become wild and somewhat aggressive parrots.

Your parakeet needs to be let out of it’s cage to play and explore everyday. While it is out you need to keep your eye on it. Parrots are inquisitive birds that will chew up everything in sight. You don’t want it to poison itself or ruin your furniture.

When handled by someone with experience ringneck parakeets become very loving, playful pet parrots.

Reaching up to 36 inches from it’s head to the tip of it’s long slender tail a Scarlet Macaw is not a small parrot.

They have a red head and body with blue on the wings and tail feathers. There is a yellow band on their upper wings.

Scarlet Macaws sport a featherless, white ring around their eyes. They also have a white upper beak and a black lower beak.

The typical life span of a Scarlet Macaw is between 35 and 50 years, however there are some that have survived for up to 75 years.

As far as macaws go they are fairly high strung and they do have a tendency to pinch. You need to discourage it from pinching at an early age to prevent it from turning into a biter.

It’s a mistake to use aggressive means like slapping to discourage a young macaw from pinching. It will learn to fear you and if it does it will bite when you try to handle it.

If you have small children keep in mind the high strung nature of a Scarlet Macaw. The constant noise and movement is bound to make them nervous.

Scarlets can learn to get along with and play with children. All it takes is some effort from you to teach both the bird and your children how to behave towards each other.

Macaws are loud parrots that will make a lot of noise if they get bored.

Yelling at your parrot to shut up, or giving it a treat or a toy to play with is not the way to get it to be quiet.

Doing so is rewarding your macaw for screaming and you are teaching it to scream to get what it wants.

You should ignore your parrot when it’s screaming and then when it finally quiets down reward it with some attention.

Eventually your macaw will learn that screaming isn’t going to get it any attention.

Scarlet Macaws are highly intelligent birds that make loving, playful pet parrots when they are properly trained.

If you think the Scarlet Macaw is too much to handle consider getting a mini macaw.

With their cuddly and affectionate nature cockatoos make great pet parrots, however some like the Umbrella or Moluccan cockatoos are just too big. If that’s the case for you then you might want to consider the Goffin cockatoo.

They are heavier than the cockatiel birds, but are about the same overall length.

Goffins have a white body with a distinctive pink color around the lores and on the underside of the crest. Under the eye coverlets, wing and tail feathers is yellow.

As do all cockatoos. they have a crest of feathers on top of their heads that they raise when they are excited or frightened. The difference being that theirs are smaller in proportion to their bodies than the crests of the other cockatoos are.

If noise is a consideration you should know that just because they are small doesn’t mean they can’t be loud. They aren’t as loud as the bigger cockatoos are, but especially in the early morning or evening they can scream.

These active little parrots need plenty of stimulation and it’s is up to you to provide it with social interaction and a wide assortment of interesting toys to play with.

You will need a larger than normal cage for these active parrots. They need room to play and move around, as well as space for the toys, perches, food and water dishes.

Some Goffin cockatoos will learn to talk, but they are better at solving puzzles and learning tricks.

They love puzzles and can take apart just about anything. If they can get at the latch of their cage door they will figure out how to open it, and escape.

If you are willing to give one the attention it needs a Goffin cockatoo will make a very playful, loyal and affectionate pet parrot.

Parakeets is a term used to define a large number of small to medium sized parrots that generally have long pointed tails. In addition most parakeets are quite colorful birds.

It’s not in the nature of a parakeet to spend it’s day sitting still and doing nothing. They are on the move from sunrise to sunset, climbing, chewing or playing with their toys.

The most widely known parakeets are the budgie birds, and in fact in some areas budgerigars are referred to as parakeets even though there are many other species of parrots that are also members of the parakeet family.

Native to Australia the wild budgie is a light green color, but breeders have managed to create a wide variety of color mutations in the captive budgerigars.

Budgies can learn to mimic speech, with the males being slightly better at it. Due to their social and inquisitive nature budgies are readily tamed, and once tamed are great at learning tricks

Cockatiel birds are rapidly catching up to the budgies as a popular pet parrot.

Cockatiels are actually members of the cockatoo family, and have the crest of feathers on top of their heads that raise when they are excited or feel threatened.

Cockatiels are very affectionate and cuddly birds as are all cockatoos, but they have an advantage over their larger cousins in that they are happy with far less attention. Give them a bit of companionship each day and you will have a tame bird.

If you don’t have the space or the money for a large cockatoo, but would love to have one a cockatiel may be the pet parrot for you.

What about talking parrots? Quaker parrots are excellent at mimicking human speech, and they can learn word association.

Quakers are stockier than cockatiels, but are about the same overall length, and have a lifespan of about 20 to 30 years.

Quakers are primarily green with a blue tinge on the primary wing and tail feathers. Because they have a pale gray color to their cheeks, throat, forehead and breasts they are sometimes called gray-breasted parakeets or as monk parrots.

If a intelligent, small talking parrot is right for you the quakers are a good parrot to check out.

It’s more than the different sizes and colors that distinguish one parrot species from another. Each species has their own personality traits.

Some parrots will do no more than imitate whistles or maybe a few words, and others can develop a huge vocabulary.

First time parrot owners should be aware that some species are a real challenge.

As great as they are, cockatoos, macaws and amazons can be extremely challenging pet parrots.

Cockatoos

Cockatoo birds are highly loyal, cuddly and affectionate parrots, but it comes with a price. They need attention and a lot of it.

Before you buy a cockatoo be sure you are willing to make the commitment to spend most of each day with it. If you lock it up in it’s cage and ignore it all day it will soon develop some bad habits like feather plucking and screeching.

Speaking of screaming, you don’t want to be in the same room as a screaming cockatoo. They are loud.

Cockatoos aren’t for everyone, but if you are willing to spend the time socializing with one you will have a very devoted and affectionate parrot.

Macaws

First of all with all but a few exceptions, macaw birds are big.

Even the mini macaws have a loud voice. Something to consider if you live in an apartment.

Macaws need a lot of attention and socialization. Without it you will have a loud, biting brat on your hands.

They don’t usually bite hard, but if they do they can easily break a finger.

Biting isn’t something that a properly trained macaw will do, but use discretion around a macaw that you don’t know.

While it’s true that macaws can be more of a challenge than some people can handle, in the hands of someone that has the energy and time to play with and train one, macaws are great pets.

Amazons

Although amazon birds. are fairly independent and don’t need as much attention as the other two birds they have a tendency to be aggressive, especially as they reach maturity.

Their aggressive nature makes them a real challenge for someone that isn’t experienced at handling parrots.

It’s not just the cockatoos and macaws that can be loud. Amazons can get very noisy if they don’t get the proper handling.

If you are sure that you can handle one if it gets aggressive, an amazon is a fun parrot.

These are all great parrots and are good companions in the right hands. Learn all you can about them before buying one and you will have an enjoyable pet rather than having to find a new home for it.
